A second residential street in Aberdeen has been cordoned off after a sinkhole appeared in the road.
Wallfield Place, in the city’s Rosemount area, has been closed after a section of the road collapsed.
It is the second sinkhole to appear in the city in a matter of days.
Traffic was still being diverted away from Viewfield Road yesterday after a section of tarmac caved in at the weekend.
Yesterday Aberdeen City Council’s communities, housing and infrastructure convener Councillor Neil Cooney, said: “Preliminary investigations have shown the issues on Viewfield Road are due to water damage from the sewer below undermining the condition road.
“Scottish Water are now working on site to address the situation.
“The road between Kepplestone Avenue and Gardens is currently closed.
“An alternative route is available between Queens Road, Rubislaw Park Road and Rubislaw Park Crescent.”
Mr Cooney confirmed a similar situation had occurred in Wallfield Place.
He added: “Wallfield Place is also currently closed due to similar issues.
“Drivers can use Rosemount Place, Westfield and Craigie Loanings as an alternative route.”
A small dip appeared in Viewfield Road – close to the entrance to the Gordon Highlanders Museum – on Saturday morning, following heavy rain the previous night.
Traffic cones and barriers were used to seal off the area of road where the ground had collapsed. But the condition of the road surface subsequently deteriorated during the day.
The hole was about 4ft in diameter and up to 4ft deep.
At the time, Councillor Martin Greig claimed the sinkhole, which is right in the middle of the road, could have been “really dangerous” if a motorist had come across it before the barriers were in place.
The Hazlehead, Ashley and Queen’s Cross member said he had received numerous complaints from residents about the “crumbling roads system in our area”.
