Former first minister Alex Salmond today revealed he is not interested in a quick referendum – he is fighting the Westminster election to win home rule for Scotland.
He made the revelation as The Press and Journal begins a special series on the man who led Scotland to the brink of independence, his first sit-down interview since the historic vote.
Over the next few days, the leader of the independence movement lifts the lid on the background behind dramatic referendum events, his future strategy – and offers a fascinating glimpse into his private life.
On Monday, the former first minister starts a great new weekly column in The Press and Journal, in which he pulls no punches with his opinions on a wide range of topics.
He has revealed that his target is returning to Westminster to force the “three amigo” party leaders to deliver in full their promises in “The Vow”, made just before Scotland voted in the referendum, which offered sweeping new powers.
He dismissed the Smith Commission’s proposals as falling short of what Scotland expects and deserves.
If it is a hung parliament, an enlarged SNP could be kingmakers in a coalition – and win the powers they want in return.
For Mr Salmond, this means nothing short of virtual independence – “home rule, devo-to-the max or near-federalism”.
