Seven foreigners and one Tunisian were killed in the attack, the Tunisian interior ministry said and local media in Tunisia are reporting that the dead include British, Spanish, Italian and French citizens.
Poland’s foreign ministry has announced that three Poles were among the wounded.
A UK Foreign Office spokesman said: “We are urgently looking into the serious situation in Tunisia.”
The National Bardo Museum is near the national parliament building, which was evacuated after the shooting.
The museum is a leading tourist attraction that chronicles Tunisia’s history and houses one of the world’s largest collections of Roman mosaics.
A Tunisian interior ministry spokesman said on Radio Mosaique that only one of the dead in today’s attack was a Tunisian. He did not provide nationalities for the others.
