The first trailer for Terry Gilliam’s long-awaited The Man Who Killed Don Quixote – which has been in development for nearly 20 years – has been revealed.
Starring Jonathan Pryce and Adam Driver, the fantasy-adventure comedy film is loosely based on Miguel de Cervantes’ novel Don Quixote and sees Pryce’s character convinced he is the iconic La Mancha literary character.
Star Wars actor Driver portrays advertising executive Toby Grisoni, who Pryce’s alter-ego believes is his sidekick Sancho Panza.
The trailer reveals the film is laced with action shots and comedic moments, including a bizarre battle with a windmill, and jumps between a 17th century setting and the modern day.
Director and Monty Python star Gilliam, 77, first revealed his plans to create a reworked version of the classic Spanish novel in 1998.
He has attempted to make the film on eight occasions, and the trials and tribulations of his first attempt in 2000 were revealed in documentary Lost in La Mancha.
The 2000 version was set to star Johnny Depp, Jean Rochefort and Vanessa Paradis.
In recent years the likes of John Hurt, Michael Palin and Robert Duvall were all linked to Gilliam’s other attempts.
Last year he revealed that shooting on the film had finally wrapped “after 17 years” of trying.
