Marvel superhero blockbuster Avengers: Endgame is crushing the competition by setting multiple records at the box office a day after its release.
Disney said the film opened on Friday with a record US domestic haul of 156.7 million dollars (£121 million), including Thursday previews, besting Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ 119 million dollars (£92 million) in 2015, and Avengers: Infinity War’s 106 million dollars in 2018 (£82 million).
Outside the US, Avengers: Endgame broke another record by grossing an estimated 487 million dollars (£377 million) at the end of Friday, surpassing The Fate Of The Furious, aka Fast & Furious 8, which took 443 million dollars (£343 million) in 2017.
The superhero film also broke the record for the highest opening weekend globally of all time with 644 million dollars (£498 million) at the end of Friday. The previous record holder was Infinity War, with 641 million dollars (£496 million).
