Jeremy Clarkson says Richard Hammond’s memory was affected by crashes

Jeremy Clarkson has said his Grand Tour co-host Richard Hammond has been left with a bad memory after his car accidents.

Hammond, 48, injured his leg last year when the car he was in crashed and burst into flames, just moments after he managed to escape it, while filming in Switzerland.

In 2006 he suffered life-threatening head injuries and spent two weeks in a coma following a high-speed crash as he filmed for their previous show, Top Gear.

Clarkson told the Sunday Mirror that Hammond forgets things after a few seconds, partly because of the crashes.

He said: “You can tell him something and five seconds later it is gone out of his head.

“Well, it is not his fault, it is because he cannot drive and he went upside down and damaged his brain.”

He continued: “He has no capacity for remembering anything and some of it is because he is not interested in anything and some of it is because he has had brain damage.”

Clarkson had a hilarious response when one news site reported his comments about Hammond’s memory and referred to him as “Top Gear’s Richard Hammond”, despite the fact that the pair and co-host James May now present The Grand Tour.

He posted a picture of the story on Instagram and wrote: “Yes, but at least he can remember what show he works on.”
