Hollywood actor Orlando Bloom has spoken about how returning to the stage in a dark play gave him an adrenaline rush.
Bloom is currently starring in black comedy Killer Joe at the London Theatre.
He plays as a detective and part-time hitman who becomes embroiled in a plot to murder a wealthy matriarch.
He previously appeared in a Broadway production of Romeo And Juliet in 2013.
The 41-year-old is known for his film roles as Will Turner in The Pirates Of The Caribbean series and as elf Legolas in Lord Of The Rings.
Speaking on The Graham Norton Show, Bloom praised his new project and said people might be surprised to see him in such a macabre production.
He said: “It’s fantastic and, although it’s 17 years old, it feels very current.
“Most people would not think of me in this role after Will Turner and Legolas. It has sensitive material and is quite dark, shocking and challenging.
“The appeal of the theatre is the response from the audience. It’s like free-falling, and a massive adrenaline rush.”
Bloom also revealed what his son thinks about his work.
Seven-year-old son Flynn was born during the actor’s marriage to former wife, supermodel Miranda Kerr.
Bloom said: “He definitely won’t be seeing Killer Joe but he has seen some of Pirates Of The Caribbean.
“It’s very hard to impress him but he liked it.”
The Graham Norton Show airs on BBC One at 10.35pm on Friday.
