Kylie Jenner has defended herself against criticism over being named the world’s youngest self-made billionaire, saying none of her money is inherited.
Earlier this month, Forbes magazine said that the 21-year-old reality TV star and cosmetics entrepreneur had surpassed the previous record set by Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg.
He was 23 when he reached a 10-figure fortune in US dollars.
Some considered the self-made part of the accolade inaccurate as Jenner was already famous for starring in her family’s TV series Keeping Up With The Kardashians and she had a large social media presence when starting her cosmetics company.
Jenner told Interview Germany magazine: “There’s really no other word to use other than self-made because that is the truth. That is the category that I fall under.
“Although, I am a special case because before I started Kylie Cosmetics I had a huge platform and lots of fans.
“I did not get money from my parents past the age of 15. I used 100% of my own money to start the company, not a dime in my bank account is inherited … and I am very proud of that.”
Jenner launched the company in 2015 under the name Kylie Lip Kits, in reference to her popular lip products, before changing its name to Kylie Cosmetics the following year.
Forbes estimated the business, which is 100% owned by Jenner, turned over 360 million US dollars (£274,118,400) over the past year from a majority of e-commerce revenue.
Jenner, whose net worth is estimated at one billion US dollars (£761 million), appeared on Forbes’ billionaires list for the first time, ranked at number 2,057 overall.
Appearing on the cover of the magazine in a red latex bodysuit, Jenner also spoke about her plans for motherhood following the birth of her first child, daughter Stormi, last year.
The younger half-sister of Kim Kardashian West said: “I do want more kids but I do not have any plans in the near future to have children right now.”
Asked if she would ever have her daughter appear on reality TV, Jenner – who has appeared in her family’s series since the age of 10 – said: “I am going to wait until she is old enough to make that decision for herself.”
