The Balmoral Arms hotel in Ballater has opened to the public following its £2.2million refurbishment.
Formerly known as the Deeside Inn, it has undergone a complete transformation and is now under the leadership of new general manager Joanna Whyshall.
All 46 bedrooms have been given a complete makeover with new bathrooms and there’s a new dining experience, from head chef Gary Quinn, and two spa treatment rooms with an outdoor hot tub.
As part of the rebranding, owner Crerar Hotels has brought in about 15 new members of staff.
Aiming for five-star accolade
Ms Whyshall, who previously managed the hotel for six years before leaving in 2018, is hoping it becomes a contender for a five-star rating.
She said: “I saw so much potential in the business so I’m really thrilled to be back to relaunch it.
“We have a fully refurbished hotel with a new name and a whole new offering and are aiming to become a five star inn with the AA.
“We are looking at being a brand new business and with that comes some really good opportunities for local people.
“I feel very proud of this hotel and what it’s going to become.”
Hotel with opportunities
Ms Whyshall is very passionate about the opportunities available for all ages across the hospitality sector and the career progression it can bring.
She said: “When I look around at what jobs are available I think there are few jobs available as interesting as hospitality for all age groups.
“I think the sector has made quite a lot of changes since all Covid restrictions were lifted and there’s never been a better time to join our industry.
“But Covid has given it a shake up and there are some great opportunities.
“It’s lively and fast-paced. No two days are the same.
“I would love as a local Aberdeenshire-based business that’s relaunching for people to give us a second look.
“It’s a great industry and one that really looks after it’s people.”
The hotel, a living wage employer, is hoping to further recruit in August.
