Lufthansa said yesterday it had enjoyed “steady” business on its Scottish routes during 2015 despite a “significant” drop in oil and gas industry -related travel.
The German airline reported more than 436,000 people flew on its services from Aberdeen and Edinburgh last year but did not give a breakdown for each airport.
Christian Schindler, Lufthansa’s UK, Ireland and Iceland regional director, said: “Once again Scotland has proved to be a key market within the Lufthansa network.
“Despite a challenging last quarter of the year, the demand for our services has remained steady.
“We will continue to offer our Scottish passengers the shortest possible onward connection times to our worldwide network through our hubs at Frankfurt and Brussels.”
Lufthansa started flying between Aberdeen and Frankfurt in October 2011, giving north-east passengers access to global connections through one of Europe’s busiest aviation hubs.
The Granite City quickly become the airline’s top Scottish departure point.
Lufthansa’s new figures show about two thirds all passengers leaving Scotland on airlines in the Lufthansa Group – Lufthansa and Brussels airlines – use onward connections to the airline’s worldwide network.
The most popular destinations for Lufthansa’s Scottish travellers last year included Singapore, Beijing, Berlin, Vienna, Houston, Prague and Milan.
