Turriff’s Robbie Wilson led the way in a large Texel section at the Royal Highland Show in Edinburgh yesterday, where entry numbers were up by more than 50 on the year.
Having won four Suffolk championships and one in the commercial cattle, this was a first Texel win at the Highland for Mr Wilson.
Star of the show was a home-bred gimmer from the 50-ewe Milnbank flock, based at North Dorlaithers Farm.
Welsh judge, Iolo Prys Jones, described her as a “correct gimmer, with tremendous carcase, power and flesh.” He said the overall standard was “outstanding”.
Stonehaven-based Ian and Lesley Carnegie dominated the overall awards in the Shetlands, taking the champion and reserve titles with sheep from their 25-ewe Raedykes flock, which was founded four years ago. This was their first breed championship win at Ingliston.
Stirling-based breeders came to the fore in the Zwartbles section, where numbers were boosted by the breed holding its National Show. Ally Baird led the way, with a full sister to his 2016 champion, a gimmer from his 35-ewe flock which he established just six years ago. Reserve went to Nicola Henderson, of the Aquila flock, with a bought-in ram that was male champion at last year’s Scottish National Show.
The Beltex section had a whopping 216 entries, with the championship awarded to a Kingledores gimmer from Richard Wood, Broughton, Biggar.
