New farming weather advisory group to be established

A new weather advisory panel for the agricultural sector is to be established, Rural Economy Secretary Fergus Ewing revealed at AgriScot.
When triggered, the panel would act as a taskforce to rapidly share information, best practice and encourage co-operation across the industry to help farmers and crofters in challenging weather conditions.
“Many parts of Scotland have experienced extremely challenging weather conditions this year, which continues to cause considerable problems for farmers and crofters,” said Mr Ewing.
“Certain areas have seen the wettest weather for 80 years, resulting in animals being brought indoors earlier than normal, shortages of silage, and issues related to complying with slurry spreading regulations.”
Initial membership of the panel includes representatives from NFU Scotland, Environment Link, SRUC, the Agricultural Industries Confederation, the Met Office, environment agency Sepa, rural charity RSABI and government.
NFU Scotland president Andrew McCornick said the panel would help strengthen the resilience of the farming sector.
