Picture by KENNY ELRICK 28/09/2018 A well-known figure in the north-east farming sector has retired after more than 40 years in the industry. Gordon Murray, who has been branch manager at Ravenhill’s Aberdeen and Maud branches for 30 years, is leaving agricultural machinery. Prior to working at Ravenhill, he spent 12 years working at Sellars Agriculture. “I enjoy the challenge of the job,” said Mr Murray, who has seen vast changes in the scale of machinery in his 42 years in the trade. “A big tractor used to be 78 horsepower and now we are selling up to 300hp. “A combine used to be 10ft wide and now you get 41ft-wide ones.” He said he plans to spend more time with his wife Jennifer and their three children and six grandchildren. “My hobby was my work,” added Mr Murray. “I am retiring but I will still be in the background when required.” Mr Murray has been replaced by James Hutton at the Aberdeen branch, and Stephen Hay in Maud. Mr Hutton said: “Gordon is well-known in the industry. Although he is past retiring age by a few years, he has the enthusiasm of a teenager.”
