Prince’s Fund in plea for evidence on livestock marts
ByGemma Mackenzie
The Prince’s Countryside Fund has issued a final plea for responses to its study into livestock auction marts in the UK.
The fund was established by the Prince of Wales in 2010 with the aim of enhancing the prospects of family farm businesses and the quality of rural life.
It has commissioned academics at the University of Exeter’s Centre for Rural Policy Research (CRPR) to carry out a study of the social benefit, functions of, and prospects for, livestock auction marts in the UK.
“We understand that auction marts are often at the heart of their agricultural communities, however, we are aware of the difficulties that many of these businesses are facing,” said Prince’s Countryside Fund director, Claire Saunders.
“We hope that this research will offer practical recommendations to help them prepare for the future and ensure their long-term survival.”
Professor Michael Winter from CRPR called for as much evidence as possible before the February 28 deadline.
He said it would help “identify examples of good practice as markets adapt to changing demands and circumstances”.
Evidence can be submitted at www.princescountrysidefund.org.uk.
