A block of Barrel winter wheat has been crowned cream of the crop at this year’s Turriff Show cereals competition.
Although the 2020 Turriff Show is not going ahead due to Covid-19 restrictions, its popular cereals competition went ahead and growers from across the region put forward their best crops for judging.
The contest, sponsored by Scotgrain Agriculture, was judged by BASF agronomy manaer, Scott Milne.
He awarded the overall prize to the leader from the winter wheat section – an entry of Barrel from John Gray at Ardlaw Mains, Memsie.
Second place in the winter wheat section went to an entry of Monroe from David Cruickshank, Logie Newton, Huntly, while third went to an entry of Lili from Gamrie grower Graham Twatt at Easter Cushie Farm.
The best winter barley crop was an entry of Kingston from AJ Norrie, Woodside of Wrae, Turriff.
Second place in this section went to another Kingston entry, this time from the I & N Campbell at Kirkton, Kinellar, while third place went to a crop of Kingsbarn from Dave Green, Craigiewell, Turriff.
The best entry of spring barley was a crop of Laureate from Brian Pirie, Castle of Auchry, Cuminestown. Second place went to an entry of Laureate from A J Duncan, Muirden Farm, Turriff, and third went to a block of Sassy from the Campbells at Kinellar.
