Sheep farmers in the Cairngorms National Park are invited to attend a special lamb marketing evening on Thursday this week.
The Cairngorms Farmers Forum has teamed up with red meat levy body Quality Meat Scotland to organise an evening to discuss ways to add value to the sheep sector.
Farmers will be told about a recent Farm Stock Scotland study, which identified different ways to add value throughout the lamb supply chain.
The study was carried out during the 2012/2013 lamb marketing campaign.
Results, released in November last year, found that Scotland’s sheep sector was being held back by a disjointed supply chain.
At the time, Farm Stock Scotland’s chairman Ian Watson said better co-ordination between farmers and the meat supply chain would improve the sector.
The study claimed that there was the potential to achieve at least £10 more a lamb through better marketing and the removal of waste and inefficiencies in the supply chain.
It also identified several key on-farm issues in the period between lamb drafting to sale, which were holding the sector back.
These were poor handling and loading facilities, gathering lambs on time, keeping fleeces dry before transit and avoiding dirty lambs by feeding only water in the 12 hours before transport.
The event on Thursday takes place at the Boat of Garten Community Hall at 7.30pm.
Speakers include Iain Riddell from SAC Consulting, Michael Blanche from Quality Meat Scotland and Grant Ireland from McIntosh Donald.
