Poultry keepers told to take action to reduce the risk of avian flu

Poultry farmers and bird keepers are being urged to take action now to reduce the risk of avian flu this winter.
The UK’s chief veterinary officers say although the UK is currently free of avian flu, as winter approaches the risk of migratory wild birds infecting domestic poultry with the disease will rise.
“Enhanced biosecurity should be maintained at all times, including regularly cleaning and disinfecting the area where you keep birds and separating them from wild birds wherever possible,” said the vets.
Poultry keepers are also urged to place feed and water in fully enclosed areas that are protected from wild birds and, where possible, avoid keeping ducks and geese with other poultry species.
Keepers are also asked to register their birds on the Great Britain Poultry Register – this is a legal requirement for those with 50 birds or more.
