A full cattle EID system should be implemented in Scotland as soon as possible, according to Quality Meat Scotland chairman Jim McLaren.
Revealing some of the details of his Beef 2020 report, which has now been submitted to the Scottish Government, Mr McLaren called for the implementation of an EID system at the earliest opportunity and the creation of a sustainability index for beef.
The Beef 2020 Group was set up by government to identify ways of driving the sector forward.
“The Beef 2020 vision is one of a confident market-driven grass-based cattle industry using leading edge technologies capable of delivering profitably to the home and world market high provenance, quality beef from sustainable production systems,” said Mr McLaren at a QMS industry breakfast at the Royal Highland Show today.
He said the report also called for increased cooperation in the supply chain and a push for better market signals and a pricing system which more accurately reflected the value of the carcase.
The full Beef 2020 report is set to be launched later this summer.
QMS used today’s breakfast to launch a new Scotch Haggis.
Produced by Campbells Prime Meat, the new haggis is made with quality assured Scotch Beef and Scotch Lamb.
