More than 60 young farmers from across the north gathered at Sibmister Farm, Caithness at the weekend to take part in the annual north beef cattle dressing, agri skills and lamb dressing competitions.
A total of 11 teams competed in the beef cattle dressing competitions, with a pair from Orkney – Frazer Leslie and Scott Drever – taking top honours.
Taking second place was a pair from Caithness – Greg Robertson and Douglas Webster – and the third place rosette went to Gary and Grant Morrison from Deveron and Speyside. First in the junior class was William and David Moir from east Aberdeenshire.
In the agri skills competition, seven teams went head to head to compete two tasks from a selection including: welding skills, skid steer handling, threading a bailer, halter making and the sheep challenge. The teams then had to complete a health and safety quiz.
Taking top honours was a team from east Aberdeenshire – Martin Gray, Tom Bruce and Scott Taylor.
Second place went to the Caithness A team of Douglas Webster, Murray Coghill and Greg Robertson, while third went to the Orkney A team of Garry Hamilton, Gareth Scott and Cameron Drever.
Concluding the day was the lamb dressing competition, which attracted four teams including a junior entry.
Top honours went to a pair from west Aberdeenshire – Gregor Ingram and Eoin Cumming – while second went to Charles Coplan and James Stevenson from Orkney, with Douglas Webster and Brims from Caithness taking third place. The junior team came was David and William Moir from east Aberdeenshire.
Scottish Association of Young Farmers Clubs regional chair for the north Isobel Swanson said: “This year’s competition saw more districts competing than in previous years and it was great to be able to host the event in my home district of Caithness. Hopefully the competition will continue to grow in future years and I wish the finalists well at nationals in Thainstone on November 1.’
