A farmer from the north-east sold the most expensive Limousin bull in the UK in 2014, according to the breed society.
The top of 55,000gn was paid in May at the Limousin spring show and sale in Carlisle.
Achieving the top price was December 2012-born bull Aultside Hulk from Gary PAtterson, who farms at Upper Forgie, Aultmore, Keith.
The beast sold to Irish farmer Dan Tynan for his Ardlea herd, which is the largest pedigree Limousin herd in Eire.
He equalled the previous record achieved for a Scottish limousin bred bull sold at auction – Grahams Samson sold for the same in 2003 – and was the highest priced British Limousin bull ever sold for export from the United Kingdom.
However, it was a maiden heifer that stole the show last year when Glenrock Illusion sold for a record-breaking 125,000gn.
Put forward by Stephen and Helen Illingworth of Lockerbie, Dumfries, this one set a Limousin world record and UK and European all-breeds record.
According to the British Limousin Cattle Society (BLCS) just under 1,900 pedigree cattle sold for £6,644,543 last year – that’s up nearly £1million or 17% on 2013.
In fact, it said sales of pedigree Limousins in the past ten years had grossed more than £58million.
BLCS chairman John Phillips, who farms at Whitland in Carmarthenshire, said: “These are terrific figures and reflective of the ongoing demand for the breed and the quality of the cattle being brought forward. The suckler men and the feeders are looking for performance and efficiency. They want easy-calving, cheap-to-keep, easy-managed cattle that are feed efficient, do well and hit the target weights and grades consistently. Limousins are fitting that bill.”
