The Stars of the Future calf show has gone from strength to strength over the years and had a record entry of 435 cattle at Stirling Agricultural Centre on Saturday.
One of the highlights of the show is the presentation of the Joe Watson Memorial Trophy for the best pair of cattle, and this year it was won by a pair of Shorthorn heifers from Richard and Carol Rettie, Craigend, Methven.
Stars of the Future Senior Champion
The native senior champion, Aberdona Rock Candy, which had been champion at Dunblane and Braco in the summer, was joined by her half-sister, Aberdona Rothes Rainbow, and the judges, Leanne Workman and Libby Clarke, agreed they were a well-matched pair, beautifully turned out.
Richard and Carol are well-known for producing top-quality show stock for clients but they have built up their own small herds of Shorthorn and Angus cattle.
Richard had a team of 20 calves to show on Saturday without Carol’s help as she was part of the organising committee.
Runners-up and best continental pair were two British Blue heifers from Jean Mackay, Auchenairney, Ayrshire.
Jean only has two cows but had 12 calves this year and Harelaw Stella and Sarah were out of the same flush of Toscan Vd Idzer and Woodend Leonna, born in May this year.
Stars of the Future Junior champion
The native junior champion went to Mike and Melanie Alford’s Aberdeen Angus heifer, Foxhill Princess Caroline, which was champion at Agriexpo.
They made their nine-hour journey from Devon worthwhile by also taking the reserve junior continental award with the Limousin heifer Foxhillfarm Touch of Class.
The junior continental championship went to Stewart and Lynsey Bett, Boquhan Farm, Kippen, for their black commercial heifer, Phoenix, bought from Balfour Baillie at the Thainstone Spectaular show for 5,000gns.
Senior continental champion was Solway View Ria, a British Blue yearling heifer shown by Kevin Watret, from Annan.
