Potato growers and dairy farmers are having a tough time at the moment.
The tattie sector is up against a decline in consumption, while milk producers are victims of supermarkets selling milk as a loss leader.
Industry is now turning to the levy bodies and asking what they are doing to help.
Why aren’t they spending more on promotion? And why won’t they launch nationwide campaigns?
The Potato Council has a One Voice campaign, which farmers can take part in to promote the benefits of eating potatoes.
While, DairyCo has produced a leaflet for consumers to understand the current market situation and to urge them to ask retailers about their milk pricing policy.
If you don’t think this is enough, then lobby these organisations and demand change.
They have farmer-led boards for a reason.
There is no reason why they can’t follow Quality Meat Scotland’s example and create nationwide campaigns to boost sales of Scottish tatties or Scottish milk.
Supply and demand will always dictate price but a bit more promotional work is likely to do more good than harm.
