Scotland’s Rural College – SRUC – has cancelled an open day at its upland research farms later this month.
The rural college was set to hold an open day at its Kirkton and Auchtertyre farms near Crianlarich on Friday May 30, offering farmers a chance to see what research is being undertaken on the ground.
However, this has been cancelled following instances of mortality in new-born lambs.
SRUC said: “While these investigations are underway it is inappropriate to subject the sheep and shepherding staff to the additional pressures brought by preparations for visitors coming to the farm.”
The open day will be rescheduled for late summer or early autumn.
The day, which is open to local hill farmers and crofters, will include presentations on what progress has been made with the sheep flock and beef herd at Kirkton.
In addition, specialist staff from SRUC and SAC Consulting will discuss the management of the unit and a programme to erect some new research buildings on the farm.
