Scots sheep farmers are set to cash in on the strong demand for wool this year.
According to the British Wool Marketing Board (BWMB), this year’s wool clip cheques are likely to remain at last year levels, although some types and breeds will see price increases.
BWMB chief executive officer Ian Hartley said the organisation’s auction system had delivered “the best possible wool returns” for producers in 2014 against a backdrop of challenging market conditions.
“Following this strong performance over the last 12 months, and with minimal stock carryover into the new season, the outlook is positive heading into the 2015 season, with demand for all types of wool strong in both domestic and overseas markets,” said Mr Hartley.
“The board continues to support the Campaign for Wool which generates a global profile that cannot be underestimated and has been hugely influential in driving demand for British wools in a number of emerging markets.”
The BWMB 2015 guide wool clip values are: Cheviot at £1.35 a kilo, Romney at £1.30 a kilo, Texel at £1.22 a kilo, Mule at £1.16 a kilo, Suffolk at £1.13 and Blackface at 90p a kilo.
