Young Charolais breeders from across the north-east have been selected to compete in a national competition in Birmingham next month.

The North East and Central Scotland Charolais Club held its regional stockjudging qualifier for stockmen and women aged between eight and 26.

The event, which was held at Airdlin Farm, Ellon, courtesy of Kevin and Jackie Mallorkey, attracted entries from more than 35 young people, including competitors from Orkney.

Classes were split into junior, intermediate and senior, and the judges for the day were Walter Wylie and Bert Taylor.

The winners and runners-up for each section will now go forward to compete at the Charolais Youth Stockjudging Final at the Livestock Event at the NEC in Birmingham in July.

The event, which was sponsored by ABP, also featured a discussion from the company’s general manager in Perth, Frank Ross, on the firm’s video image analysis system.

There were also haltermaking and tying up demonstrations from Ian Matthews, clipping and dressing advice from Neil Caul and Allen Drysdale and a showing demonstration from Kay Adam.

The club’s regional co-ordinator, Carly Mackay, said: “We are totally thrilled at how the young breeders day has gone this year. The enthusiasm from the competitors is great to see and has left the committee and myself looking forward to next year’s event already.

“We also can’t thank our hosts – the Mallorkey family – enough for all the hard work that has gone into organising this day for our club. We wish the winners and runners-up all the very best of luck for the finals in Birmingham.”

The winners were as follows:

Senior
