A renowned sheep farmer from the Highlands has been tasked with finding ways to improve the Scots sheep sector.
John Scott – who keeps more than 4,000 commercial and pedigree ewes at Fearn Farm, near Tain, Ross-shire – will lead an industry group tasked with coming up with recommendations for the sector.
Announcing the appointment at the Royal Highland Show, farm minister Richard Lochhead said the industry-led task force would take a “short, sharp look at what more the sheep industry can do to meet the rising global demand for quality red meat”.
“I have asked the group to report by Easter 2016 – a traditional time for enjoying natural, delicious and versatile Scotch Lamb – with recommendations as to how to help deliver a successful future for the Scottish sheep sector,” added Mr Lochhead.
The industry needed to look to continually improve, whether in production efficiency, marketing or processing prowess, he said.
