A Scots vegetable company has developed a weird and wonderful bright green swede for sale in Asda stores this Halloween.
Stewarts of Tayside has developed the luminous green swede following six years of trials work, which has involved crossing green skin swedes with traditional swedes to strengthen the green colouring and provide a deeper flavour.
The family company, which is based in Glencarse near Perth, specialises in swedes, strawberries and raspberries.
Commercial director, Liam Stewart, said: “Our green swedes feature a deeper, earthier taste than traditional swedes but are still packed with all the health benefits you would expect, including a hearty boost of Vitamin C.”
Asda’s regional buying manager for Scotland, Brian O’Shea, said: “Following a successful trial over the last two years, we’re thrilled to launch this innovative new product across the UK. Carving swedes for Halloween is a tradition that dates back to the Victorian era so it’s great that it’s coming back on trend. It’s even better that a renowned, local Scottish producer is growing these vegetables and leading the way.”
The ghoulish vegetables launch in Asda stores across the UK tomorrow, retailing at 97p.
