Limousin breeders from the north and north-east are among the line-up of winners in the Scottish Limousin Club’s annual competition.
The contest was judged by Lockerbie breeder Stephen Illingworth who runs the Glenrock herd, and last year sold a heifer – Glenrock Illusion – for 125,000gn.
“The standard of cattle was outstanding and the difference in locations from extreme hill farms to some of the best arable land in Scotland showed just how versatile the Limousin breed is,” said Mr Illingworth.
“Without exception everyone’s cattle were quiet, placid and at ease when we walked through them. The class winners were truly modern Limousin cattle, moderate framed with great length and tops, just what the market requires.
“The future for the quality Limousin cattle I saw in Scotland is huge. It is an easy-kept cow that produces a finished product that no other breed can match as consistently.”
The overall herd champion rosettes went to Ian Nimmo’s Maraiscote herd at Wishaw, Lanark, with the reserve title awarded to Andrew Burnett’s Spittalton herd at Upper Spittalton, Blair Drummond.
Amongst the winners from the north and north-east was Mike Massie, who runs the Elrick herd at Auchnagatt, near Ellon. He won the prize for the best bull born in 2014 with Elrick Jackal, which stood junior champion at last month’s Stirling Bull Sales.
Meanwhile, Alasdair and Gill Macnab, of Kildun Cottage, Kildun Farm, Dingwall, won the best cow family title with Alagils Ainsi.
