NFU Mutual is urging all Land Rover Defender owners to become more security savvy to prevent thefts.
According to the rural insurer, Defenders have become a greater target for thieves as they are no longer in production.
Although claims for Defender thefts were down in Scotland last year at £35,000, from £54,000 in 2014, claims across the UK were up 8% in 2015 and cost the insurer £1.8million.
“I urge Land Rover Defender owners to be vigilant and be on their guard. Owners should ensure they have adequate security measures in place and consider fitting an after-market approved immobiliser and a tracking device if possible,” said the insurer’s agricultural vehicle specialist, Clive Harris.
“When not in use Defenders should be parked in a garage or a secure area which is well lit if possible. Never leave keys in the ignition and keep keys out of sight at home and when out in public areas. It’s essential that easy opportunities are taken away from thieves.”
NFU Mutual has also recommended that Defender owners consider using a forensic marking solution or system on component parts, to have the vehicle identification number etched on windows, and for a hidden battery isolation of a fuel cut-off switch to be fitted.
Owners should also consider taking photographs of unusual features, modifications, damage or repairs which could aid identification if the vehicle is stolen.
