Two Aberdeenshire beef farmers have been shortlisted for Marks & Spencer’s Farming for the Future awards.
The awards set out to recognise producers who “champion sustainability and innovation”.
First up in the running for the young producer award is David Watson, 34, of Darnford Farm, near Banchory.
Mr Watson, who farms in partnership with his family, supplies M&S with beef through the 2 Sisters Food Group.
The award judges commended his understanding of the beef market and said they were impressed with his willingness to trail and embrace new farming methods and his commitment to animal health, welfare and performance.
Next up in the shortlist is John Lohoar from Glenbervie Home Farm in Stonehaven.
Mr Lohoar, supplies Aberdeen-Angus to the retailer in partnership with Scotbeef, is in the running for the innovation award.
Traditionally his herd calved in two blocks – once in the spring and then again in the autumn – but the decision was made to move the autumn-calving block to June to improve the quality and quantity of the milk produced by the cows for their calves. As a result, calf growth rates improved and concentrate feeding reduced.
The judges said they were impressed with Mr Lohoar’s passion for the Aberdeen-Angus breed, and his willingness to alter his farming methods to improve cattle performance.
The award winners will be announced at the Royal Highland Show next week.
