An award-winning north-east beef farming enterprise is hosting a charity fundraising open day next month.

The Watson family, who run 440 Salers cross cows at Danford Farm, near Banchory, will swing open the gates to their enterprise on July 21.

The family – Peter, sons Adam and David, and their wives Aynsley and Lynne – were crowned Scotch Beef Farm of the Year last year.

Next month’s free event, which is supported by Quality Meat Scotland, Harbro, the Salers Cattle Society UK and the British Charolais Cattle Society, will offer farmers the chance to visit the farm and hear about the family business.

As well as a farm tour, the day will feature trade stands, stock-judging, a guess the weight competition and a machinery valuation.

A charity auction will also be held on the day featuring many lots including one of the farm’s in-calf Salers heifers.

All funds raised from the charity auction will be donated to two charities – the Scottish Association of Mental Health (SAMH) and rural charity RSABI to help with its work in both raising awareness of the issues surrounding mental health and helping those affected by poor mental health in rural areas.

Peter said: “We are looking forward to welcoming people onto the farm for what promises to be an informative and fun day. However, we are also keen that the event helps to raise awareness of mental health issues.

“Sadly, we are well aware of the consequences which severe mental illness can have on a farming family and the difficulties faced by those left behind. We hope that by being open and frank, we can encourage people to speak confidently and share their experiences of mental illness and, by talking, help to break down the stigma that surrounds this illness. Knowing where to find support and help is crucial which is why the work of the two charities we are supporting is so valuable.”

The open day starts at 1pm with tea and coffee from 1.30pm before the official welcome and start at 2pm.

The event is free, however those wishing to attend are asked to pre-register by July 15 by phoning Harbro customer services on 01888 545200 or by e-mailing farming@harbro.co.uk. They are asked to provide a name, address and a contact number for each person attending.
