Each week, we ask small businesses key questions.
Here we speak to Moira Gilbert, owner of needlework and craft shop Meg’s Attic in Banchory
How and why did you start in business?
I ran my own picture framing business locally for 23 years and used to frame some of the items produced in the craft shop.
I was also a crafts “dabbler”, so I got to know the previous owner well. When she mentioned that she wanted to sell up, I thought it would be an interesting new business for me so I grasped the opportunity and haven’t looked back since.
How did you get to where you are today?
I have a brilliant team, who really know their stuff. We also run classes in knitting, crochet and patchwork.
We must be doing something right as customers travel from Fife, Dundee, Inverness and Aberdeen to the shop.
I have a son living in Australia, so visits to him are also an opportunity to find out what the trends are there and bring them back home.
Who helped you?
My staff – Audrey, Libby, Eydie, Janet, Jane and our new Saturday girl, Beth – as well as friends, family and, of course, our loyal customers.
I’m a member of the Federation of Small Businesses and they’ve been there to help with the problems that every small business encounters at some point.
Without everyone’s help and support I couldn’t have got the business to where it is today, so thank you everyone.
What has been your biggest mistake?
Trying to do everything myself and not delegating enough. I think I’ve found a good balance now.
What is your greatest achievement?
Being in business successfully in a small town for 10 years. I was also runner-up in the Scottish Stitch Retailer of the Year category in the British Craft Awards in both 2014 and 2015. That meant a huge amount as we were nominated by our customers.
If you were in power in government, what would you change?
I’d give small businesses more help with rates to help them survive and thrive, rather than end up with empty shops.
What do you still hope to achieve?
We are moving across the road to ground floor premises on November 1. We are hoping to see some of the people who have been unable to visit due to the stairs we have currently. It means we will be able to offer our services to a wider range of customers.
What do you do to relax?
I love to spend time with my grandchildren, Jethro, Caleb, Emilie, Esther and Belle. I’m also a member of our local book club so there’s always something on the go. We’ve just finished After You by Jojo Moyes.
What are you currently reading, listening to or glued to on the TV?
Nothing at the moment, I am too busy trying to get the new shop organised. I do have a habit of recording EastEnders but I never seem to get round to watching it.
What do you waste your money on?
Nothing. There is always more craft stock to buy.
How would your friends describe you?
Hard working, genuine and kind.
What would your enemies say about you?
I hope I don’t have any. I try to be fair and see the best in everyone.
What do you drive and dream of driving?
I drive a Ford Kuga at the moment but would love to drive a convertible on summer days, if only they made them high enough for me to get in and out of.
