An award-winning electrician has enjoyed a boost in turnover after welcoming 25 new clients despite the oil and gas downturn.
Scott Kelly said his Aberdeen-based company, KLY Electrical, has enjoyed a 60% rise in turnover to £216,000 in the past 12 months allowing him to create two new jobs. The firm, which was founded in 2011, now employs six people.
The 29-year-old, who was named Tradesman of the year at an awards ceremony in June, said: “It’s been an outstanding 12 months. When I first started I thought it would just be me working away to make a salary; now I employ six people and have over 150 regular clients on the book.”
Having worked as an electrician in the oil and gas industry for nearly four years, Mr Kelly made the decision to launch his own business after realising he wanted to be his own boss. Starting with no clients, his business now works across all sectors undertaking everything from rewiring commercial and residential properties to appliance testing.
He said: “Although the local area has been hit hard by the recent economic downturn I still firmly believe the city offers fantastic opportunities for new and existing businesses and that belief has been reflected in KLY’s significant increase in turnover this year.”
He also credits advice and from Business Gateway Aberdeen & Shire for his growth.
“Knowing my adviser is there to turn to has given me confidence to make big decisions which have helped the business grow,” he said. “Investing in a job management system has also helped increase productivity by 30% and freed up my time to drive the business forward. I fully expect next year’s turnover to increase at the same rate as we target more property management companies, take on new staff and look to expand into areas outside of Aberdeen.”
