Secondary school pupils in Moray have gained exposure to a career in photography with tips from the Press and Journal’s local snapper.
Senior students at Elgin High School have been learning how to take different kinds of pictures during a series of classes.
Yesterday, the P&J’s Gordon Lennox visited the classroom to guide the enthusiasts on how to get the best shots to make the papers.
The pupils were set a tight deadline to take a photograph which most appositely represented the advice which had been given to them with the best entry used in print.
While some of the students completing the NPA photography course opted to head outdoors, the rest decided to stay inside to make use of studio facilities.
S5 student Chloe Yule said: “I thought it would be good to stay inside because that’s where the classes take place. Dimming the lights put the focus on the people in the photo.”
Classmate Morgan Riddell added: “I had some ideas straight away. I wanted to make sure I took something that reflected the course and showed it was clearly at Elgin High School.
“The class was fascinating. It’s certainly something I want to look into more.”
During their course, the students also staged an exhibition at Moray College UHI, selling more than 30 images to raise money for charity.
Art teacher Jess Standfast explained the course was designed to prepare the pupils for a life behind the lens.
She said: “There’s no exam, it’s based on a portfolio, so it’s a lot more vocational. It’s great to have professionals come in, so the pupils can build relationships which help them open doors.”
