Credit and debit card holders in Aberdeenshire are being urged to take advantage of a new scheme aimed at protecting them from fraudsters.
Free card “minders” can be picked up at public libraries in Alford, Huntly, Insch, Inverurie, Kemnay, Kintore and Westhill under a scheme run by the shire council’s Garioch and North Marr community safety group.
Most new credit or debit cards have a symbol showing they are radio-frequency identification technology (RFIT) compliant, allowing contactless payments.
Criminals can create an RFID reader with minimal effort and steal personal data.
The card minders help to stop such theft by covering the plastic with an aluminium envelope, preventing them from being cloned by RFID readers.
Police sergeant Darren Mills said: “Police Scotland commends Garioch and North Marr community safety group for … providing their communities with a product that aims to deliver an extra layer of protection against bank and credit card details being obtained and used for criminal gain.”
