Moray-based Springfield Properties is to become one of the first UK housebuilders to fit all its new homes with cabling to power electric vehicles.
The developer said it expected a rapid increase in demand for home car-charging infrastructure in the coming years.
Its announcement was welcomed by Scottish Transport Minister Humza Yousaf yesterday.
All new Springfield houses will, as a standard feature, incorporate 7-kilowatt cabling to the most practical spot to instal a vehicle charging point.
Company chief executive Innes Smith said: “The Scottish Government has pledged that by 2032 all new vehicles sold in this country will be electric, but we anticipate that the uptake will increase rapidly long before then.
“One of our values as a company is to include everything a customer needs in their new home so, with this is mind, we wanted to make it as easy as possible for our customers to go electric.”
Mr Yousaf said sales of electric and alternative fuel vehicles were rising faster in Scotland than the rest of the UK. “This is a welcome announcement,” he said, adding: “The ability to charge electric vehicles at home helps reduce barriers to ownership.”
