A Stornoway aerial filming company that recently marked the first anniversary of its launch has invested in advanced equipment to help secure more work.
HebDrone, which has produced footage for national television and a range of clients, spent £20,000 on its new multi gimbal UAV drone.
Equipped with two cameras, it allows the firm to film thermal as well as standard footage simultaneously, providing information on heat loss from buildings.
Run by Conal Ferguson, HebDrone already provides clients, including insurance firms, roofing contractors, agricultural research initiatives, quarry companies, archaeological services, and tourist accommodation suppliers, with film captured from heights up to almost 400 feet.
Work has also been coming in from UK and internationally-based film production companies, with one project due to be aired on the BBC’s One Show shortly.
Mr Ferguson said: “Because no one else offers the services we do on the islands, we’ve had to create a market and then build a client base. We started with one drone but after we secured more diverse work it became clear that additional specialist equipment was needed.
“Now the business is established, buying the third drone gives us greater flexibility and flight time even in challenging weather.
With the assistance of Business Gateway the company secured a £20,000 grant from Western Isles Council’s Grants for Growth scheme to buy the new drone.
Donna MacLeod, of Business Gateway, said: “Establishing a new market and providing high quality footage has helped the company quickly gain a foothold.
“With our help Conal has secured funding and increased his knowledge as well as gained new digital skills to help push his business forward.”
Mr Ferguson set up the company in January last year, after a number of years working in the oil industry as a remotely operated vehicle (ROV) operator.
