Each week, we ask small businesses some key questions. This time we speak to Claire Paige, director of Deeside Classic Campers in Finzean, Aberdeenshire
How and why did you start in business?
I was a personal medical secretary but always dreamed of running my own business. We are an outdoor and energetic family and the light bulb moment – why not combine our interests – happened over wine with my husband, Martin, one evening. Deeside Classic Campers was born.
How did you get to where you are today?
Although I knew the type of business that I wanted to run, I knew nothing about starting one. I attended every start-up course that Business Gateway offered. This was invaluable and its support continues.
Who helped you?
My mum, Sandra, with babysitting at a moment’s notice and attending exhibitions with us. Weave Digital designed the logo and website which has given us a fantastic brand. Eileen Cooper of LimeTree Marketing and Business Consultancy is an inspiration and supports and guides our marketing strategies. Also, my financial adviser, Harry Cox of Alban Associates, who I am now delighted to call a friend. He is the person who has made all this possible for me.
In addition, the Federation of Small Businesses, which provides invaluable advice for any small business, and finally my wonderful husband for his excellent skills in building the barn to house the business as well as his love and patience.
What has been your biggest mistake?
Not doing this 10 years ago. I love the autonomy of making my own business decisions.
What has been your greatest achievement?
Helping people have that exceptional holiday they will never forget and exceeds their expectations.
If you were in power in government, what would you change?
I would give substantial grants to business start-ups. I’d also legislate to make sure banks are as good as their word in supporting and financing small businesses, and not asking for unrealistic deposits to be met.
What do you still hope to achieve?
To grow my business to a fleet of campervans, with a shop selling Volkswagen merchandise and a service area with a restoration facility for my own campers and for those of other classic VW campervan owners. My husband would like to oversee this part of the business – he retires from the police in two years, so I’d better get my skates on.
What do you do to relax?
The whole family, including my 14 and three-year old girls, Emily and Martha, travel to support my husband in the Mini Sport Rally Team. We also enjoy cycling and camping, while I am currently training for the 26-mile charity Kiltwalk as part of a Finzean ladies team.
What are you currently reading, listening to or glued to on the TV?
I don’t have a lot of time to watch television but listen to the comedy hour on BBC Radio 4extra to send me to sleep.
What do you waste your money on?
I have a weakness for handbags and shoes, but lately have been investing in the business on fun things such as soft furnishings for my office.
How would your friends describe you?
I had to ask this question on Facebook. The answers were tenacious, kind, thoughtful, polished, passionate, energetic, a perfectionist, classy and glam.
What would your enemies say about you?
I hope I don’t have any.
What do you drive and dream of driving?
I drive my dream car, a Subaru Impreza STI Type UK, but my husband is currently restoring a classic Mini Cooper for me. I am truly blessed.
