A three-year, £10.5 million refurbishment programme is under way at the home of Bunnahabhain single malt whisky on Islay.
Spirit and wine producer Distell International, which owns the distillery, hopes the new “brand home” and visitor centre will be ready to welcome tourists for the start of the 2020 season.
As part of the upgrade, some of the original buildings will be restored to their former glory.
Others will be removed and relocated to create more space, allowing for “better operational flow” across the site and improving the experience for visitors.
Work has started with the demolition of four warehouse buildings, as well as the start of upgrades to the existing pumphouse.
The overall project also includes a new filling store as well as refurbishments for the main production building and six cottages alongside the distillery. These cottages will eventually be used for holiday accommodation.
Distell said the work was being carried with “minimal disruption” to whisky production.
Brand director Derek Scott added: “Our investment programme here at Bunnahabhain is about improving the operational side of our distillery for the long term future.
“The plans aim to make navigation of the site much easier for the visitor and also, in simple terms, to declutter it.”
