North-east animal feed giant Harbro has snapped up a rival in the Borders for an undisclosed sum.
The Turriff-based company’s acquisition of RH Miller Agriculture adds three stores to its retail portfolio and will boost its feed business in the region.
Harbro will have 18 Country Stores across Scotland when the deal completes.
Robert Miller, 70, is the sole owner of the Dalkeith-based company which has shops in in Dalkeith (Fordel), Peebles and Hawick.
Graham Baxter, Harbro managing director, said:
“This is another exciting move for Harbro adding three retail premises and strengthening our retail division. It will further complement our feed business in the Borders, allowing us to offer animal health advice and products, clothing and equipment to our growing customer base.”
He added: “These stores have a strong presence built on the pet and equine markets and we look forward to growing the business which will give increased buying strength and allow us to be more competitive.”
The deal will increase sales outlets for animal feed and associated products produced at Harbro’s factory in Lanarkshire.
“For livestock customers, our mill at Birkhill, south Lanarkshire is in close proximity to the Borders and is ideally located to serve the area, giving them the benefits of reduced transport costs and the delivery of compounds, blends, feed buckets, mineral licks and feed blocks straight from the point of manufacture” said Mr Baxter.
“This acquisition is a natural fit to our business and customers will benefit from increased choice, performance products, value for money and purchasing direct from a primary manufacturer, based in the south of Scotland.”
The deal takes effect takes effect on August 12. Company director Drummond Miller will remain with the business for a period of 12 months, Harbro said.
