A venison company that sources game from the Highlands has announced a deal to produce own-brand steaks and sausages for supermarket giant Sainsbury’s.
The founder of Highland Game, Christian Nissen, said the deal was the “just the eyes of the hippo” for the firm as the supermarket offers the venison products in stores across the UK.
The move comes after the firm announced a deal to sell an expanded range of its own Highland Game branded range of venison grill steaks, meatballs and burgers in 250 Sainsbury’s stores in March.
Mr Nissen said its altest deal with Sainsbury’s was the “fruit of some seriously hard work” to expand sales of venison products in supermarkets south of the border.
He said: “We’ve always felt like we had more to offer but it was difficult to get down south. It’s taken a long time.”
The company, which processes 55,000 animals at its headquarters in Dundee, warned that supply of UK-sourced venison is going to be its “biggest constraint” as shoppers in England and Wales start picking up a taste for venison products.
