Aberdeen has lost out to Edinburgh as the Scottish departure city for new flights between the UK and Faroe.
Faroese flag carrier Atlantic Airways will start twice weekly scheduled flights from the Scottish capital next spring, it announced yesterday.
The new service forms part of Atlantic’s new strategy of operating more flights to the islands’ closest neighbours.
Its Edinburgh-Faroe route will operate on Mondays and Fridays from March 30.
Passengers will land at Vagar Airport, built during World War II by UK servicemen, many of them Scottish, who were stationed on the islands.
Atlantic chief executive Jorgen Holme said: “We are close to the UK at a time when people are looking for new and exciting experiences that are perhaps closer to home.
“We hope many more people from the UK will visit our beautiful islands in 2015.”
Asked why Aberdeen was not chosen for UK departures, Mr Home said: “We were persuaded by the opportunities for onward connections at Edinburgh, particularly to London, and by the airport’s ability to service a very much larger catchment area.”
