Aberdeenshire Council is urging people to do the majority of their shopping in their own communities as part of a drive to bolster high streets.
The authority has pledged to support the regeneration of north-east town centres in 2015 and has challenged residents in one port to see how much they can purchase from local retailers.
Peterhead councillor Stuart Pratt said that every penny spent in his town would benefit the local community.
He said: “Our independent shopkeepers have worked hard to provide a great service through difficult times and have remained committed to the town through thick and thin.
“Now it’s time to show our support for them.
“I’m very pleased to support Peterhead’s Shop Local campaign, and hope everyone who lives or works in the town will rally round too, and make their own ‘Peterhead Pledge’.”
Councillor Anne Allan explained that the scheme was not solely for Peterhead people, and invited the wider community to take part.
“You can make a commitment to shop locally near your own home, it has the same effect – supporting local retailers for the benefit of local communities,” she said.
Peterhead’s town centre regeneration officer, Heather Barclay, added that those who could afford it could go a step further and help people most in need this month by purchasing an extra present to donate to the Gift Tree scheme or make a donation of non-perishable food to a local food bank.
