Aberdeen International Airport (AIA) has followed up the busiest year in its history with a small rise in passenger numbers at the start of 2015, new figures show.
AIA’s bosses said yesterday a total of 252,561 people flew in and out of the north-east gateway last month, an 0.5% increase on January 2014.
Both helicopter and fixed wing passenger numbers grew, by 2.1% and 0.1% respectively.
Managing director Carol Benzie said: “We are delighted to see passenger numbers holding strong despite testing weather conditions throughout January, including high winds, snow and ice.
“Historically, January is one of the quietest months of the year for us following the peak of December’s holiday season and we are pleased to report a sustained increase.”
A record 3.76million-plus passengers used the terminal in 2014, which was up on the 3.48million recorded in 2013.
The continued growth is good news for the new owners, Spain’s Ferrovial and Australia’s Macquarie, who struck a £1billion deal last year to buy AIA from Heathrow Airport Holdings.
Edinburgh and Glasgow airports enjoyed stronger passenger growth than AIA last month, up 7% to 628,285 and 11.4% to 485,685 respectively, while London Heathrow was up by 1.3% to 5.45million – a new record for January.
