The first Shetland whisky has sold out in advance of its official launch date of September 1.
All 172 bottles of Shetland Reel single malt were pre-ordered by enthusiasts within days of their sale being announced.
Four different cask strength whiskies, distilled in Portsoy but bottled in Unst, the UK’s most northerly island, were made available.
Stuart Nickerson, director of The Shetland Distillery Company, which is behind the whisky and award-winning Shetland Reel gin, said he was surprised at how quickly the bottles, which ranged in price from £100 to £130, sold.
“In time we plan to start distilling whisky on Unst, and this launch of bottled in Shetland single malt whisky was designed to build interest,” he said, adding: “We plan to do more bottlings in the not too distant future.”
Shetland is the only part of Scotland never to have had a legal whisky distillery.
