The Press and Journal’s readership has soared by more than 20% in the last year.
The latest National Readership Survey (NRS) has revealed the newspaper is bucking the national trend as Scottish dailies post an average market decline of 8.6%.
The latest statistics show that Press and Journal readership was 145,000 between October 2013 and September 2014, compared with 176,000 between October 2014 and September this year – an increase of 21.4%.
The paper’s Dundee-based sister title The Courier has also enjoyed soaring popularity, boasting a 17.2% increase in readership during the same period.
Readership was 157,000 this year, up 23,000 on last year.
Press and Journal editor-in-chief Damian Bates said it was clear readers appreciated that the paper was a strong voice for the north and north-east.
“It’s really fabulous to see that the Press and Journal continues to grow its readership of the newspaper,” he said.
“The brand is phenomenally well known and the team are really proud of the fact that more and more people want to read the printed product, while at the same time we continue to grow our digital audience.
“It’s a brilliant success story that shows the strength of the Press and Journal across the north of Scotland.”
Mr Bates added that the latest figures marked the third period in a row that readership of the newspaper had increased.
“We hope to keep building on that success well into the future,” he said.
“Our pledge is to continue to invest in our journalism and the newspaper which costs less than half the price of a cup of coffee on the high street and is far more satisfying.”
This year, the Press and Journal’s relaunched website was nominated for Website of the Year at the Society of Editors Regional Press Awards in London.
It was also shortlisted for Innovation of the Year at the Scottish Press Awards in Glasgow.
Online editor Martin Little said the Press and Journal’s digital and print offerings were satisfying the news needs of all ages and generations.
“We get millions of views on the Press and Journal website every month and our audience has quadrupled since we launched our new website last year,” he said.
“Tens of thousands of people have either registered or subscribed to our online breaking news service and soon we will be launching our new app so you can get the news direct to your mobile no matter where you are.”
