Two more promising teenagers have taken their first steps on the career ladder with the Press & Journal’s help.
Chloe Ross, 17, and Amy Dunbar, 16, signed up for traineeships at James Dun’s House (JDH) after the hairdresser signed up to our Apprentice 100 campaign in late September.
They have joined the growing list of youngsters who have already found jobs through our campaign.
The list includes Liam Livingston at Aiken Group, Jessica Logue at Thorpe Molloy, Rory McCann at Converged, Megan Horne at Brodies and Jack Hall at Meldrum House Hotel.
Score Europe and Aberdeenshire Council have also filled the 10 apprenticeship positions they created as part of our initiative, while Scotia Homes and Aubin Group have new recruits starting in January.
Chloe and Amy will complete Level 2 SVQ courses in hairdressing before going on to Level 3 and becoming fully-qualified stylists.
In the first few weeks of their new roles, they have gone through an induction at the salon and are now learning to work on the salon floor.
They assist the full-time stylists, bone up on the art of customer service, and learn about the products used at JDH.
Chloe said: “I left school in July and worked at a shop in Union Square. I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do, but I’ve always been really into fashion and keeping up to date with styles. Hair has always been a big thing for me.
“When I heard about the role at JDH, I applied and was offered a week-long trial. Everyone was welcoming and it went really well. I got into the swing of things quickly and was offered the job.”
Amy said: “I heard about the job through the campaign. I always wanted to be a hairdresser and am really enjoying the job. It has been what I expected it to be and I can see myself doing it for a long time.”
Director Duncan Wiseman said the new recruits had got off to a great start.
He said: “They are two very capable girls. They take everything on board and are doing really well.”
JDH pledged to create eight apprenticeships as part of our campaign, and with Chloe and Amy already in place, there are a further six positions up for grabs.
Candidates would be joining at an exciting time for the company. JDH recently launched its training academy and is now in the process of buying new premises in Aberdeen to create space for more apprentices to learn their trade.
JDH’s first barber shop will also be located at the new premises.
