North-east food firms join gluten-free venture

Two north-east food firms have joined forces to send gluten-free biscuits to the world.
Family-owned shortbread and oatcake maker Duncan’s of Deeside has teamed up with Pulsetta Foods, an award winning maker of unique gluten-free foodstuffs, to create a new range of sweet and savoury biscuits.
The two companies combined currently export to over a dozen countries on four continents and work with multiple UK supermarkets and independent retailers. The joint venture formed between the two firms will pool their market relationships and product development expertise, the companies said.
Dr Karsten Karcher of Pulsetta Foods said:”It is the marriage of two north-east companies for this venture. One brings that fantastic 30-year heritage and knowledge of the industry, while we are a fledgling, increasing business.”
Mr Karcher met Paul Duncan, the third generation of the family to run the Laurencekirk-based firm, at the Grampian Food Forum awards dinner a year ago where Pulsetta won an award for the best new retail product for a small business.
“Paul and I hit it off and started floating a few ideas to each other. Last year we got together and said this really makes a lot of sense. They have the experience, the infrastructure and development. Pulsetta has the products and the gluten-free market reputation. Together we can go so much more quickly than doing anything separately.”
In 2014, Pulsetta also won £50,000 in financial support in a entrepreneurial competition, ScotEdge.
Mr Duncan said: “This exciting partnership sees Duncan’s enter the growing gluten-free and free-from market overnight, and we are delighted to offer a Great Taste multi-award winning range of gluten-free products to our customers.”
