Two north-east firms were among the prizewinners at an awards ceremony celebrating Scottish innovation across all sectors of industry.

Aberdeen-based Hydro Group, which designs and manufactures cables and connectors for various industries, scooped two trophies at the Made in Scotland awards and was a finalist in a third category.

Fathom Systems, a marine engineering firm based in Portlethen, was the area’s other winner at the event in Edinburgh.

The inaugural awards were created to showcase the achievements of Scottish businesses and individuals.

Hydro Group won the prize for manufacturer of the year and the Made in Scotland Award, which recognises the most outstanding entry across all categories.

The company was also in the running for exporter of the year, but was edged out by the Scottish Salmon Company.

Hydro Group managing director Doug Whyte said: “Being presented with these awards is excellent recognition of the continued growth and successes the company has achieved over the past three decades.

“Having recently announced a £2million investment in expanding our premises to support the continuous diversification and development the business, this really is a very exciting time for the group.

“Everyone is delighted with the outcome, and I am incredibly proud of the entire team for their continued enthusiasm, innovation and development of market-leading subsea cables and connectors.”

Fathom Systems was crowned engineering company of the year, following on from its success at this year’s Subsea UK awards, where it won the small company of the year and innovation for safety categories.
