It is a city which regularly features high on the list of the most expensive places in the UK to buy or rent property.
The North Sea oil and gas sector has attracted thousands of people to Aberdeen, but has also served to drive up the cost of living.
But a new survey has suggested that Aberdeen is actually among the cheapest of 12 oil and gas industry hotspots across the world.
The analysis examined cost of living data from the top bases for professionals in the energy sector.
Aberdeen was ranked the second most affordable, beaten only by Calgary in Canada as the “cheapest”.
The report was produced by professional recruitment firm PRG, who specialise in the oil and gas industry.
Steve McCutcheon, chief executive of PRG, said: “Aberdeen is a very attractive place to live and work because although it may be expensive by UK standards, it isn’t when compared to the other major oil and gas centres around the world.
“Add to that a booming North Sea sector and it becomes evident that Aberdeen is one of the major draws for experienced oil and gas professionals.”
The report found the oil and gas sector is now one of the highest paying in the world with an annual median salary of more than £56,000.
Those working in highly skilled engineering jobs can expect an even higher wage, with a median salary of more than £66,000 per year.
PRG has examined three major cost of living indicators – rental costs, eating out and weekly shopping – to help professionals make an informed decision about the best place for them and their families to live.
Luanda in Angola has topped the list as the most expensive with a monthly living cost of around £2,973.93, compared to £1,096.40 in Aberdeen and £1,001.95 in Calgary.
Other cities featuring on the list include Houston, Dubai, Stavanger, London and Singapore.
Reacting to the news yesterday, Aberdeen City Council finance convener Willie Young said: “From Aberdeen’s point of view we’ve got to recognise that we’re competing as a global city.
“The evidence may suggest otherwise but what we know is Aberdeen is very expensive in UK terms, so we need help from the Scottish Government and others to continue to be attractive.”
